Introduction to the Centre for Applied Crop Science
Innovate UK (https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/innovate-uk ) established a network of agricultural innovation centres, one of the key recommendations of the UK’s Agri-Tech Strategy published in June 2013.
The second of the three centres, the Centre for Applied Crop Science, is a collaboration between industry and research partner, backed by a £21.4m strategic government investment from the Department of Business, Enterprise, Innovation and Skills (BEIS).
The candidate will report to the CEO.
We are looking for an Accounts & Administration Manager to join us as we start up the business, to deliver not just the traditional accounts and administration role, but also to shape the way that the centre operates and be part of the founding team.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Accounts Manager, ideally Big4 trained, who will bring their expertise to an evolving organisation, providing pragmatic and timely advice, working in partnership with the centre’s funders and wider stakeholders.
In addition to the Accounts Management role you will also be responsible for managing the centre activities and overseeing core processes. You will provide direct support to the CEO as well as ad hoc support to the other senior team members.
You will be highly resilient and emotionally intelligent, able to quickly form strong working relationships and excited to be part of creating something truly different. This is a hands on role that will require the successful candidate to get involved in multiple activities.
The Role Profile
Key point of contact for internal and external finance questions. This will include external accountants, funding providers, banking providers and insurers.
Provide commercial support to the CEO and wider leadership team on a range of opportunities.
Be responsible for producing monthly management accounts covering historic and future performance and provide recommendations on in-flight changes needed to achieve annual targets. To include cash flow, P&L and capital expenditure reporting.
Be responsible for day to day transactions and also month end procedures including control account reconciliations.
Own the annual budgeting cycle, ensuring compliance with any deadlines, either internal or external.
Maintain Asset register.
Overseeing financial transactions.
Prepare and submit information to statutory authorities including HMRC.
Develop and implement rigorous company internal financial controls.
Be responsible for liaising with external accountants and managing the process of producing annual statutory accounts.
Review internal procedures, identifying any weaknesses and providing recommendations for improvements.
Assist in the preparation of monthly reporting packs for key stakeholders.
Support to CEO.
Creating a great customer experience on the phone & with face to face visitors.
Clerical and administrative responsibilities.
Implementing and maintaining procedures / administrative systems.
Responding to Email queries.
Assist with the organisation of events / travel / meetings.
Delegated HR responsibilities.
Experience and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be Big4 trained with a strong management accounts background. They will have worked in similar sized organisation before, ideally with experience in start-ups and not for profit.
The candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent and persuasive communication with a proven ability to build strong working relationships across a range of partners and stakeholders, internal and external.
ACCA, CIMA or ACA Qualified.
Technically strong accountant with a solid understanding of UK GAAP, corporation tax, PAYE and VAT.
Hands on working style with a positive attitude to re-prioritising whatever it takes to get things done.
Administrative/ IT Skills - Word, Excel, Power point, Outlook.
Natural flair for problem solving, being innovative and using intuition as well as logic.
Track record of improving processes and controls.
Experience of public sector accountancy approach, dealing with government funding sources and EU funding sources.
The post is based at the National AgriFood Innovation Campus in York, where excellent facilities are available.
The role is a part time role of 25hrs, (5 days a week, approx. 5hrs per day). Additional hours may be required at busy times.
The role is fixed-term contract to 30/4/19, with the possibility of extension or permanency.
A salary of £35-40k (pro rata) plus a competitive benefits package will be available for the right candidate.
