Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication & Relationship Skills
• Communicate data and ideas related to education within the Trust, with the partner university, NHS England, Department of Health or Health Education England personnel/committees.
• Process information received that may be of a sensitive or contentious nature in a professional manner, involving only the necessary parties and providing confidentiality where applicable.
• Facilitate potentially difficult conversations between multiple parties including student radiographers, other learners, colleagues, senior managers or patients. This may be one to one conversations and with groups.

Knowledge, Training & Experience
• Display a highly specialist level of knowledge in radiography technique and clinical practice.
• Demonstrate professional clinical knowledge acquired through a BSc (Hons) in Radiography and post graduate (Masters level) qualification or equivalent experience either in a radiography field or in education.
• Demonstrate significant previous experience in supervision, managing learners, and personal experience in radiography.

Analytical & Judgemental Skills
• Advise the Radiology Services Manager about education and training functions in the service. They will advise senior colleagues on the management of clinical education provision for student radiographers and other visitors to Radiology. This will involve managing competing demands for education within Radiology.

Planning & Organisational Skills
• Plan and organise the rosters for learners and will ensure that the roster is agreed with the partner university for the students in their clinical placements.
• Compile reports and assessments on student progress.
• Contribute to the planning and development of education and delivery to students and staff groups within Radiology.

Physical Skills
• Develop and maintain the technical skills required to perform radiography examinations and able to instruct students who are developing these skills. These skills are complex and require dexterity.
• Undertake moving and handling of patients and equipment.

Responsibility for Patient/Client Care
• Undertake highly specialist clinical technical imaging and duties.

Responsibility for Policy/Service Development
• Collaborate for the development of departmental policies in relation to student education and oversee the implementation of these educational policies across Radiology.
• Manage clinical governance and comply with student learning requirements by the University of Cumbria, HCPC and College of Radiographers.

Responsibility for Financial & Physical Resources
• Safely use expensive and highly complex radiology equipment.

Responsibility for Human Resources
• Take responsibility for highly specialist teaching to student radiographers and qualified staff groups.
• Assist with selection of student radiographers for The Christie and at the partner university.
• Supervise clinical experience within the relevant frameworks.
• Provide pastoral care of student radiographers.
• Facilitate the training of clinical assessors.
• Coordinate work experience placements with the trust team, elective placements and other visitors to radiology (e.g. prospective and medical students).
• Promote careers in medical imaging and actively participate in raising the profile of the profession with the public.
• Participate in performance development review.

Responsibility for Information Resources
• Record personally generated information and ensure a system is in place, compliant with best practice in data management and Trust and University policies, to record, collate, process and store information on the progress of learners.
• Collate specific data for external audit including HEE requirements.
• Update radiology systems patient records and maintain departmental databases as appropriate.

Responsibility for Research & Development
• Support colleagues undertaking research, to maintain an awareness of current clinical trials and ensure this is included in the education of the students, including imaging patients enrolled in clinical trials.

Freedom to Act
• Expected results and outcomes will be defined by the Radiology Services Manager in conjunction with the Programme Lead at the University, but the post holder is expected to apply best practice to achieve these results. Guidance may be provided by peers or academic staff at the partner university.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • DCR(R) or BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiographer Degree.
  • HCPC Registration


Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualification in radiography subject or education
  • Management qualification.
  • College of Radiographers Practice Educator Accreditation Scheme (PEAS)


Experience

Essential criteria
  • Expert experience of a range of radiography modalities and techniques.
  • Experience of working at a senior level, including team management experience.
  • Supervision/teaching of students or other learners.
  • Previous involvement in introducing new developments in radiography.


Desirable criteria
  • Experience/awareness of oncology radiography and clinical practice at other Trusts.
  • Experience of being a clinical tutor


Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively and manage conflict resolution with all grades of staff, patients, carers and general public.
  • Effective people management skills of all staff, and ability to motivate varying members of the team.
  • Excellent leadership, organisation, and decision making skills under pressure in a clinical environment.
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills, and presentation skills.

  • Image interpretation skills


Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of radiographic techniques/modalities and how to teach them.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance.
  • Good knowledge of anatomy and pathology.


Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of current trends in radiography.
  • Experience of working with current undergraduate radiography programmes.
