Your Role in a Different Kind of RAC
At the RAC, we’re known for roadside rescue, but our SMR division is all about delivering planned, structured repair and servicing directly to our members—right from their driveway to their workplace car park. Say goodbye to emergency callouts and unpredictable shifts! Here’s what you can expect:
- Core Hours: 40 hours per week, with core hours from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm and 1 in 4 Saturdays.
- Location: You’ll be part of the Derby cluster, covering areas like Derby, Burton-upon-Trent, Swadlincote, Long Eaton, and Belper.
What to Expect in Your Day-to-Day
Your day starts with a clear digital schedule, and each job is pre-booked with the member expecting you. You’ll carry out:
- Routine servicing
- Diagnostics using advanced mobile equipment
- In-depth repairs typically done in a workshop
- Member advice and recommendations based on your inspection
- Vehicle safety checks aligned to RAC standards
With SMR, you’ll have everything you need from day one: a fully equipped RAC van, fuel card, uniform, full tool set, and advanced diagnostics. You’ll use your technical skills and problem-solving abilities to get people moving again—safely, quickly, and confidently.

What You’ll Need
- Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent)
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as a vehicle technician working on light vehicles
- A full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 points
