A Different Kind of RAC Role: Welcome to SMR

Our Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) division is a fast-growing part of the RAC, focused on delivering planned, structured repair and servicing directly to our members. Say goodbye to emergency callouts and unpredictable shifts! Here, you’ll work through a scheduled list of jobs, equipped with the time, tools, and support to do quality work.

Where You’ll Work

You’ll be part of the Barnet cluster, covering areas like Barnet, Finchley, Totteridge, Whetstone, Hendon, and Golders Green. Enjoy the freedom of being out on the road in your local area, tackling a clearly planned schedule of appointments—no reactive callouts, just organized, pre-booked work!

Your Daily Responsibilities

Your day starts with a clear digital schedule, and each job is pre-booked with the member expecting you. You’ll carry out:

  • Routine servicing
  • Diagnostics using advanced mobile equipment
  • In-depth repairs typically done in a workshop
  • Member advice and recommendations based on your inspection
  • Vehicle safety checks aligned to RAC standards

With SMR, you’ll have everything you need from day one: a fully equipped RAC van, fuel card, uniform, full tool set, and advanced diagnostics. Use your technical skill and problem-solving ability to get people moving again—safely, quickly, and confidently!

Why SMR is Different (and Why Techs Love It)

  • Planned appointments instead of emergency responses
  • Consistent workflow instead of unpredictable demands
  • In-depth repairs, not roadside temporary fixes
  • Time to do the job properly, with built-in support and parts ordering
  • Clear schedules using RAC’s mobile service platform

This role is perfect for techs who want variety and independence without the reactive nature of Patrol.

What You’ll Need

  • Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a vehicle technician working on light vehicles
  • A full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 points

No CV required when you apply, and it takes just 5 minutes—starting your journey with us has never been easier!

Benefits That Go the Extra Mile

  • Earnings That Motivate: Market-competitive base salary with opportunities to increase earnings through bonuses and premium-rate overtime.
  • Opt-in Guaranteed Overtime: Choose to work extra rest days at £30 per hour, with the potential to earn an additional £3,000 to £5,000 per year.
  • Tools to Drive Your Future: Enjoy a free RAC Ultimate Complete Breakdown Service from day one, plus access to a car salary sacrifice scheme after 12 months.
