Mobile Vehicle Technician - Derby
Join the RAC as a Mobile Vehicle Technician in Our SMR Division!
Welcome to a new era of mobile repair! At the RAC, we’re not just about roadside rescue; we’re pioneering a fresh approach with our Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) division. Here, you’ll deliver structured repair and servicing directly to our members, whether they’re at home or work. Say goodbye to emergency callouts and unpredictable shifts—this is your chance to work through a planned schedule, equipped with everything you need to excel.
Your Role and Responsibilities
As a Mobile Vehicle Technician, you’ll be the face of the RAC, working in your local area (Derby, Burton-upon-Trent, Swadlincote, Long Eaton, Belper) and focusing on:
- Routine servicing
- Diagnostics using advanced mobile equipment
- In-depth repairs typically done in a workshop
- Providing member advice and recommendations based on inspections
- Conducting vehicle safety checks aligned with RAC standards
Your day will start with a clear digital schedule, allowing you to prepare for each job and deliver quality work without the stress of reactive breakdowns.
What You’ll Need
- Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent)
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a vehicle technician working on light vehicles
- A full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 points
No CV is required to apply, and it only takes 5 minutes to start your journey with us!
Why Choose SMR?
Our technicians love working in SMR for several reasons:
- Planned appointments instead of emergency responses
- Consistent workflow without unpredictable demands
- In-depth repairs rather than temporary fixes
- Time to do the job properly, with built-in support and parts ordering
- Clear schedules using RAC’s mobile service platform
This role is perfect for those who seek variety and independence without the reactive nature of traditional patrol work.
Compensation and Benefits
At the RAC, we believe in rewarding our team members. Here’s what you can expect:
- Competitive Salary: A base salary of £40,178, with potential earnings up to £52,000 through bonuses and overtime.
- Guaranteed Overtime: After your first month, opt to work extra days at £30 per hour—just one extra day a month could earn you an additional £3,000 per year!
- Tools for Success: Enjoy a free RAC Ultimate Complete Breakdown Service from day one and access to a car salary sacrifice scheme after 12 months.
- Time Off That Matters: 23 days of holiday (rising to 25 with service), plus bank holidays and support for work-life balance.

- Ongoing development, including future EV and diagnostic skills
- A role where providing peace of mind to members is part of your daily work
