Your New Role

We’re on the lookout for a Director of Digital Programming, Weekends to join our dynamic team. Reporting to the VP of Programming, you will lead the editorial team responsible for curating and optimizing the content experience across our core digital platforms — web, mobile web, and mobile apps — for a 24/7 global news organization.

This role sits at the exciting intersection of journalism, audience behavior, and product innovation. We’re seeking a candidate with sharp editorial judgment, strong leadership skills, and a strategic mindset grounded in data. Your mission? To ensure our digital front doors reflect the urgency, depth, and breadth of our journalism while serving the evolving needs of our audiences around the clock.

As the Weekend Director, you will play a critical role in developing and executing our weekend homepage strategy.

Please note: This position is based in our London newsroom, working a 4-day, 40-hour week, including Saturdays and Sundays.

Your Role Accountabilities

  • Lead a team of editors to program the organization’s home and front-door digital experiences (web, mobile web, and app).
  • Guide programming strategy across formats — including live video, text, audio, and visuals — ensuring each is optimized.
  • Exercise strong editorial judgment in real-time, especially during high-pressure breaking news situations.
  • Ensure content selection aligns with core editorial values while meeting user needs (Catch me up, Take me deeper, Entertain me).
  • Frame stories with clarity, accuracy, and impact, including writing or approving high-quality headlines and promotional language.
  • Make sophisticated editorial decisions and curate across live, text, visual, and video formats seamlessly.
  • Monitor real-time analytics to inform programming decisions and adjust content placement dynamically.
  • Manage and mentor a distributed editorial team, providing direction, feedback, and growth opportunities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Extensive experience in digital journalism, audience programming, or editorial operations within a fast-paced news or media environment.
  • Experience managing teams in a 24/7 publishing operation, ideally with global coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance real-time editorial instincts with long-term strategic thinking.
  • Deep understanding of audience engagement, digital consumption behaviors, and cross-platform storytelling.
  • Experience collaborating with product and design teams to enhance digital storytelling or homepage surfaces.

Working Conditions

This role is advertised as a Hybrid work model, combining remote and in-office work, in line with our current company policy and to be agreed upon with your Line Manager. Please note that this agreement may be adjusted based on business needs.
