We’re on the lookout for a Senior Technology Design Engineer to join our dynamic Technology Design team in Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, or Basingstoke. Location: Manchester/Newcastle/Birmingham or Basingstoke – with agile working opportunities
Hours: 40 hours per week - some flexibility available
Starting Salary: From £42,000 per annum
Sector: Mechanical, Electrical, and Technology – Highways

Your Role

As a Senior Technology Design Engineer, you will be the technical authority, guiding design outputs from concept to implementation. Your mission? To ensure our solutions are compliant, integrated, and future-ready. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), communications, and smart infrastructure systems that meet National Highways standards.

Are You…?

  • Qualified: HNC/Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Communications, or Technology Engineering?
  • Experienced: A highways technology engineer with strong ITS expertise?
  • Confident: Leading design delivery and technical assurance activities?
  • Knowledgeable: Familiar with National Highways standards (e.g., DMRB) and governance frameworks?
  • A Leader: Ready to mentor and develop fellow engineers?

Do You…?

  • Lead technology design packages across ITS, communications, and power systems?
  • Take ownership of design outputs from concept through to implementation?
  • Drive multidisciplinary integration across civil, electrical, and systems teams?
  • Communicate technical risks and solutions clearly to clients and stakeholders?

Your Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll be instrumental in delivering high-quality highways technology design solutions. Your day-to-day will include:

  • Leading complex technology design (ITS, communications, power) from concept to implementation.
  • Ensuring solutions are buildable, maintainable, and right-first-time.
  • Acting as a technical authority within design assurance, leading reviews and approvals.
  • Ensuring compliance with DMRB, National Highways, and industry standards.
  • Providing SME leadership across ITS, communications networks, and smart infrastructure systems.
  • Driving multidisciplinary integration across teams.
  • Engaging with clients and stakeholders through workshops.
  • Reporting on progress, risk, and performance to support program delivery.
  • Leading continuous improvement and digital engineering initiatives.
  • Mentoring and developing engineers to foster a high-performance culture.

What We’re Looking For

This role is perfect for you if you:

  • Hold a degree in Electrical, Electronic, Communications, or Technology Engineering.
  • Have significant experience in highways or infrastructure technology design.
  • Possess proven experience in leading design delivery and assurance activities.
  • Have strong knowledge of National Highways standards and governance frameworks.
