You’ll be part of the Chelmsford cluster, covering areas like Chelmsford, Brentwood, Basildon, Southend-on-Sea, Grays, Tilbury, Thurrock, Maldon, Braintree, Canvey Island, and Rayleigh. The RAC is renowned for roadside rescue—but this isn’t that. Our Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) division is a fast-growing part of the RAC, dedicated to delivering planned, structured repair and servicing directly to members—from their driveway to their workplace car park.

Forget emergency callouts and unpredictable shift patterns! Here, you’ll work through a scheduled list of jobs, equipped with the time, tools, and support you need to deliver quality work.

What to Expect

Your day starts with a clear digital schedule. Each job is pre-booked, with the member expecting you. You’ll carry out:

• Routine servicing
• Diagnostics using advanced mobile equipment
• In-depth repairs typically done in a workshop
• Member advice and recommendations based on your inspection
• Vehicle safety checks aligned to RAC standards

With SMR, you’re not reacting to breakdowns—you’re delivering planned work that you can prepare for. From day one, you’ll have everything you need: a fully equipped RAC van, fuel card, uniform, full tool set, and advanced diagnostics. Use your technical skill and problem-solving ability to get people moving again—safely, quickly, and confidently.

What You’ll Need...

Either:

• NVQ Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent) with 2+ years’ experience
• or 5+ years’ experience as a Vehicle Technician/Mechanic

And a full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 points.
