Location: Manchester/Newcastle or Birmingham – with agile working opportunities
Hours: 40 hours per week - some flexibility available
Starting Salary: From £42,000 per annum
Sector: Mechanical, Electrical, and Technology – Highways

Your Role

As a Technology Design Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in delivering innovative highways technology solutions throughout the entire project lifecycle. You’ll be responsible for:

  • Developing, coordinating, and assuring designs for integrated digital and roadside systems.
  • Ensuring compliance with client requirements and industry standards.
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to create safe, efficient, and future-ready infrastructure.

Are You the One?

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • HNC/Degree (or working towards) qualified in Electrical, Electronic, Communications, or Technology Engineering.
  • Experienced in highways or infrastructure technology design.
  • Familiar with National Highways standards (e.g., DMRB, TA401).
  • Comfortable working across ITS, communications, or digital infrastructure.
  • A strong problem-solver with a collaborative mindset.

Your Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver technology design across ITS, communications, power, and digital infrastructure.
  • Produce drawings, specifications, and technical documentation (2D/3D).
  • Ensure compliance with DMRB, National Highways, and industry standards.
  • Apply design assurance, supporting reviews and gateway compliance.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks for right-first-time delivery.
  • Support ITS, communications networks, and smart/IoT-enabled infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Contribute to bids, innovation, digital engineering, and team development.

What We’re Looking For

This role is perfect for you if you:

  • Hold a Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical, Electronic, Communications, or Technology Engineering.
  • Have experience in highways or infrastructure technology design.
  • Possess knowledge of National Highways standards (e.g., DMRB, TA401).
  • Are experienced with ITS, communications, or digital infrastructure systems.
  • Understand ITS, telecoms/IP networks, and power/control systems.
  • Have experience using CAD or digital engineering tools.
  • Exhibit strong problem-solving skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.
