We are on the lookout for a Senior Technology Design Engineer to join our dynamic Technology Design team in Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, or Basingstoke. Location: Manchester/Newcastle/Birmingham or Basingstoke – with agile working opportunities

Hours: 40 hours per week - some flexibility available

Starting Salary: From £42,000 per annum

Sector: Mechanical, Electrical, and Technology – Highways

Your Role

As a Senior Technology Design Engineer, you will be the technical authority, guiding design outputs from concept to implementation. Your expertise will ensure that our solutions are compliant, integrated, and future-ready. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), communications, and smart infrastructure systems that align with National Highways standards.

Are You…?

  • HNC/Degree-qualified in Electrical, Electronic, Communications, or Technology Engineering?
  • An experienced highways technology engineer with strong ITS expertise?
  • Confident in leading design delivery and technical assurance activities?
  • Knowledgeable about National Highways standards (e.g., DMRB) and governance frameworks?
  • A strong leader who can mentor and develop engineers?

Do You…?

  • Lead technology design packages across ITS, communications, and power systems?
  • Take ownership of design outputs from concept through to implementation?
  • Drive multidisciplinary integration across civil, electrical, and systems teams?
  • Communicate technical risks and solutions clearly to clients and stakeholders?

Your Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the delivery of complex technology design (ITS, communications, power) from concept to implementation.
  • Own design outputs, ensuring solutions are buildable, maintainable, and right-first-time.
  • Act as a technical authority within design assurance, leading reviews, checks, and approvals.
  • Ensure compliance with DMRB, National Highways, and industry standards while managing technical risk.
  • Provide SME leadership across ITS, communications networks, and smart infrastructure systems.
  • Drive multidisciplinary integration across civil, electrical, mechanical, and systems teams.
  • Act as a key technical interface for clients, leading workshops and stakeholder engagement.
  • Support programme delivery through reporting on progress, risk, and performance.
  • Drive continuous improvement, digital engineering, and BIM adoption.
  • Lead input into bids, developing innovative, compliant, and competitive solutions.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, fostering a high-performance culture.

What We’re Looking For

This role is perfect for you if you:

  • Are Degree-qualified in Electrical, Electronic, Communications, or Technology Engineering.
  • Have significant experience in highways or infrastructure technology design.
  • Have proven experience leading design delivery and assurance activities.
  • Possess strong knowledge of National Highways standards and governance frameworks.
